Can

Can is another fantastic example of how Krautrock has influenced modern music. As one of the most important krautrock bands, they were skilled in merging different genres such as psychedelic rock, improvisational jazz, and avant-garde.

Faust

Ash Ra Tempel

Bowie moved to Berlin with his friend and fellow musician Iggy Pop in the late 1970s to escape a lifestyle that had become self-destructive and toxic.

It was during this time that he started collaborating with artist Brian Eno. What followed was beautiful.

Lodger may not have been as commercially successful as the previous two albums, but it still showcased Bowie’s creative genius and commitment to pushing the boundaries of music.

So there you have it, that’s a summary of how the remarkable Berlin Trilogy of David Bowie came to be. It’s fascinating how his personal struggles and moving to another city played a crucial role in creating some of his career’s most iconic and influential music.

When I first listened to the “Low” album in Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, I immediately grasped how experimental and revolutionary it was. 

It was released in 1977 and significantly departed from his previous glam rock sound. This album was influenced by electronic music and German Krautrock, and Bowie collaborated with Brian Eno, an English musician, and American producer Tony Visconti.

The album features instrumentals and vocals split across two distinct sides, contrasting experimental sounds with pop song structures. 

The track “Warszawa” is a prime example of their ambient music experimentation, while “Sound and Vision” showcases a catchy, guitar-driven pop sound. 

The result is a blend of rock, electronic, and world music that laid the groundwork for the post-punk movement.

‘Heroes’

In the same year, Bowie released the second album in the trilogy, “‘Heroes'”, also recorded with Eno and Visconti. 

As with “Low”, the album is divided into two halves, one comprising rock and pop songs and the other featuring more experimental instrumental pieces. 

The title track “[‘Heroes’]” stands out not only for its driving guitar and anthemic vocals but also for the powerful message of love and unity in the face of adversity.

I also found some songs to be influenced by the works of Philip Glass and Gary Numan, such as “V-2 Schneider” and “Sense of Doubt.” 

Overall, the album balances art rock and experimental rock elements, forging new musical frontiers and leaving a lasting impact on musicians across genres.

Lodger

The final part of the Berlin Trilogy, “Lodger,” was released in 1979 and continued Bowie’s collaboration with Eno and Visconti. 

It differed from its predecessors by incorporating more world music influences and a broader range of styles. “Move On” has a catchy, upbeat melody, while tracks like “African Night Flight” and “Yassassin” infuse the album with unique, global sounds.

“Lodger” was well received, charting on the UK Albums Chart, and it represents the ongoing evolution of Bowie’s sound. It marks the end of Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, a series of albums that reshaped the landscape of rock and popular music.

When I first delved into the world of Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, it piqued my curiosity that his collaboration with American singer Iggy Pop was a crucial influence. 

They both moved from Los Angeles to Europe to escape the toxic grip of drug addiction and embrace a new, more experimental sound. The albums that resulted from this partnership, The Idiot and Lust for Life, marked a turning point in both their careers.

German Krautrock, specifically bands like Kraftwerk, were essential in shaping the trilogy’s sound. 

The futuristic and mechanical beats I experienced while listening to the trilogy definitely made me consider their impact on Bowie and his work. 

Moreover, Brian Eno, who was an important collaborator on the trilogy, further intensified this influence with his expertise in ambient music.

Other Artists Influenced by the Berlin Trilogy

As an ardent Bowie fan, it has been enthralling to trace his influence on other artists. The Berlin Trilogy, in particular, has impacted multiple musicians. 

For example, Joy Division found the moody atmospherics of the Berlin Trilogy inspiring, as seen in their dark soundscapes.

Furthermore, guitarist Robert Fripp and Roxy Music’s Brian Eno played essential roles in the creation of the trilogy, which also had a lasting impact on their career trajectories. 

Fripp went on to collaborate with Bowie on the albums Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and Blackstar. Adrian Belew, a key member of the glam rock band Roxy Music, also found his career taking a new direction, working with Bowie on the trilogy.

Transition to Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)

After the fascinating experience of working on the Berlin Trilogy, I couldn’t help but notice how Bowie continued to reinvent himself. His next album, Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), showcased a new evolution in his music. 

Though Eno didn’t join him for this album, Bowie kept some of the experimental elements from their time together. I could hear how the album served as a departure from the Berlin records while still maintaining elements that made those records remarkable.

“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” saw Bowie leaving behind the melancholic tones of his previous albums in favour of a more aggressive and confrontational sound. 

The album featured several standout tracks like “Ashes to Ashes,” which revisited his character Major Tom and showcased a new wave influence that would dominate Bowie’s music throughout the 1980s. 

I was amazed at how he managed to incorporate nostalgic elements with a fresh and modern sound.

Bowie’s Later Career

In the years following the Berlin Trilogy and as well as Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), Bowie continued to change and adapt his music. 

He released a series of more commercially successful albums such as Let’s Dance, Tonight, and Never Let Me Down. Bowie’s fame soared with hits like “Fame,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Modern Love.”

Of course, there were experimental moments in his later career too. In the 1990s, Bowie experimented with electronica, drum, and bass, resulting in albums like Black Tie White Noise, Earthling, and Outside. 

One fascinating piece of Bowie’s career is his connection with the Berlin Wall. The city played a crucial role in developing his sound, and he even performed the song “Heroes” next to the Wall during a concert in 1987, just a couple of years before it fell.

In the 2000s, Bowie released albums, including Heathen and Reality, which saw a return to his rock roots. 

His final two albums, The Next Day and the critically acclaimed Blackstar, showcased his ability to create music that both reflected and transcended his past. Bowie’s final recordings were released on the EP “No Plan” shortly after his passing in 2016.

Looking back on Bowie’s incredible career, it’s clear to me that his Berlin Trilogy was a turning point, resulting in a daring and experimental body of work that continues to influence music today. 

And as a fan, I can’t help but appreciate how Bowie managed to keep creating and evolving until the end.

The Ties between Bowie and the City of Berlin

The partnership with Brian Eno proved essential in creating the Berlin Trilogy, as Eno brought an innovative approach to Bowie’s music with his ambient soundscapes and the use of the Eventide H910 Harmonizer.

In addition to Eno’s influence, Bowie’s experiences in Berlin significantly impacted the Trilogy. 

The Berlin Wall divided the city, and this tension between East and West played a role in shaping his music. 

Bowie was always seeking to challenge himself as an artist, and Berlin provided a new environment for him to explore and find inspiration.

While in Berlin, Bowie embraced the local culture, immersing himself in the city’s nightlife and artistic scenes. During this time, he also expanded his skills as an actor, which is evident in his performance in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell To Earth.

My favourite album from the Trilogy is Heroes, filled with deeply emotional songs inspired by Bowie’s experiences in the divided city. The title track, “Heroes”, was even recorded close to the Berlin Wall, adding more meaning and depth to this iconic song.

Final Thoughts

In the years following the release of the Trilogy, Bowie continued to be associated with Berlin, even performing at the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1987. 

Through his music, Bowie captured the spirit of the city, and even though he moved on to other projects in his career, the Berlin Trilogy remains an essential part of his legacy. Bowie himself, as well as his music, was impacted by Berlin’s creative scene, and in turn, the city was impacted by him and his music.

It’s fascinating to see how Bowie’s time in Berlin influenced his music and other aspects of his life. The Berlin Trilogy and the city itself will forever be linked to this extraordinary artist.

As a techno enthusiast, I can’t talk about Berlin’s club scene without mentioning the iconic Berghain. Known for its debaucherous weekend-long techno parties, Berghain is situated in a former power plant and features a minimalist, industrial aesthetic. The music is dark, raw, and relentless, keeping me dancing until the early morning hours.

Tresor

Another must-visit club is Tresor, which has been a staple in the Berlin techno scene since the early 1990s. Tresor boasts multiple floors with a variety of musical styles, and I always appreciate the high-profile international DJs that regularly pass through its doors. The club’s unique setting in a former vault adds to the overall experience.

Watergate

Watergate is a club that stands out for its techno music and floating dance floor, which offers stunning views of the River Spree. I am drawn to Watergate’s lineup of prominent techno and electro DJs, making it an unforgettable night of dancing with a truly unique atmosphere.

Sisyphos

Sisyphos has become a favourite of mine due to its versatile music styles and famous after-parties. Located in the east of Berlin, this club offers a more relaxed atmosphere to dance and connect with other club-goers. The artistic and unconventional setting, complete with an outdoor area, sets it apart from other venues.

Griessmuehle

Another favourite of locals is the Griessmuehle. The club is in a former pasta factory, and it’s the epitome of Berlin’s underground techno scene. The variety of rooms and outdoor spaces caters to a diverse crowd, all united in their passion for techno.

Lastly, I have to mention: //about blank. This venue has a vibrant, underground atmosphere, with multiple floors and an outdoor garden area. The lineup of techno DJs is diverse, and the club’s reputation for surprise performances adds a sense of excitement to each visit.

History of Techno Clubs in Berlin

Origins

It’s important to mention that techno music itself emerged in Detroit in the late 80s, with inspiration from bands like Germany’s own Kraftwerk. The genre arrived in West Germany at the end of the 1980s. Techno in Berlin evolved from its origins in Detroit and became its own unique flavour.

The roots of Berlin’s club scene can be traced back to the start of the Cold War, where negotiations over a bottle of whiskey led to the abolition of a postwar curfew, thus setting the stage for the no-curfew culture we see today.

Post-Wall Era

In this pivotal era, Tresor, Der Bunker, and E-Werk played significant roles in establishing techno music and club culture in Berlin. Tresor, for example, began as an illegal party called Ufo Club and operated underground for more than three years.

The fall of the Berlin Wall led to a burst of creativity and unity between East and West Berliners, and clubs like Tresor served as meeting points for people from both sides of the city to celebrate their newfound freedom.

Modern Scene

In the modern era, techno clubs have continued to thrive in Berlin. The scene is known for its world-class clubs, such as Berghain and KitKatClub, which attract thousands of visitors from around the globe (NPR). 

The love for music in Berlin is not, however, confined to the clubs. Many popular music festivals and beer gardens also contribute to the musical tapestry of the city.

This culture has also given birth to sub-genres and new artistic movements, making the city a hub for electronic music enthusiasts.

Getting in

In my experience, getting into Berlin’s techno clubs requires a bit of preparation. Going with a small group or even solo can increase your chances of getting in. 

Also, maintaining an even gender ratio seems to be appreciated by the club bouncers. Another important aspect is to know the DJ or line-up for that night, showing them you’re genuinely interested in the music. 

A useful tip I’ve discovered is to buy tickets in advance when possible and avoid being too intoxicated or loud while waiting in line. 

Arriving early on weekends, or better yet, during the day on Saturdays, can also make your entrance easier at popular clubs that are open all weekend.

Dress Code

The dress code varies from club to club, but I’ve learned that dressing smartly while staying true to the club’s vibe is the way to go. 

Casual yet fashionable outfits are appreciated in most clubs. It’s essential to be comfortable, as techno parties in Berlin can last well into the next day or even the next night. 

Pay attention to the specific atmosphere of each club and dress accordingly to fit in with the crowd.

Safety

It’s crucial to prioritise safety during your clubbing experience. I always recommend keeping an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded or dark areas. 

If possible, use the club’s cloakroom or lockers to store your items securely. Additionally, it’s vital to stay hydrated and know your limits when it comes to consuming alcohol or other substances.

Lastly, using a taxi or rideshare service after a night out can be a safer and more convenient option than walking or taking public transport alone.

This compilation linked the term techno with electronic dance music produced in Detroit at the time.

House and Acid

Techno music originated in the United States during the 1980s and gained global popularity in the 1990s. 

It was influenced by European electronic dance music, such as Germany’s Kraftwerk and Belgium’s C.J. Bolland. 

House music, a close relative of techno, developed during the same period in Chicago, featuring a repetitive 4/4 beat and synthesised basslines. Acid house is a subgenre of house music characterised by the use of Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser, creating a distinctive squelchy sound.

Dub Techno and Ambient

As techno evolved, it spawned a variety of subgenres. Dub techno emerged in the 1990s, blending the minimalism of techno with the expansive reverb and delay effects associated with dub music, resulting in a hypnotic and atmospheric sound. 

Ambient techno, on the other hand, is a subgenre that focuses on creating lush, textured soundscapes, often eschewing the traditional 4/4 beat or downplaying it in favour of more experimental rhythms.

Hardcore and Trance

Another offshoot of techno is hardcore, which developed in the early 1990s. This subgenre pushes the tempo and intensity of techno to the extreme, often incorporating distorted and aggressive kicks, breakbeats, and rapid-fire synth patterns. 

Trance music, another techno subgenre, emphasises melodic and harmonic progressions, typically featuring repetitive synth phrases and a steady 4/4 beat. 

Trance music often creates an immersive and hypnotic experience for listeners and has roots in both house and techno.

Tech House

As techno and house continued to grow, the two genres began to merge, giving rise to tech house. 

This subgenre combines the repetitive, driving rhythms of techno with the melodic elements and groovier basslines of house music. 

Tech house has become increasingly popular in electronic dance music scenes worldwide, bridging the more experimental techno and the more accessible house music.

Techno Across the Globe

Berlin and the European Techno Scene

The fall of the Berlin Wall allowed for a merging of East and West, and techno music flourished in the city’s underground club scene with its unifying and energetic nature. 

Over time, techno became synonymous with Berlin, attracting top DJs and artists from around the world. Berlin developed its own type of techno distinct from Detroit. Other European cities, such as Amsterdam, also embraced techno and contributed to its growth and evolution.

Chicago and House Music

Techno music is closely related to another popular genre, house music, which has its roots in Chicago.

DJs and producers like Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, and Marshall Jefferson became instrumental in shaping the sound that would later be known as house music. 

While different from techno in its origins and specific musical characteristics, house and techno both belong to the broader umbrella of electronic dance music and developed alongside each other, influencing one another throughout their respective histories.

United Kingdom and Warp Records

I knew I was in for a treat when I first arrived in Berlin. The city’s clubbing scene is legendary, with techno clubs ruling the roost.

Take Tresor, for example, housed in a massive concrete cube. This dark techno temple has been at the forefront of Berlin’s clubbing scene for years.

Another fantastic spot to experience the techno culture is Watergate, located right next to the Oberbaumbruke Bridge on the Spree River. This club has indoor and outdoor areas to explore, creating a unique party atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere.

But, to better appreciate the distinct flavour of Berlin’s Techno clubbing scene, you must understand the difference between Detroit Techno and Berlin Techno.

Techno isn’t the only genre that makes Berlin’s club scene so vibrant. From hip-hop and indie rock to reggae and soul, the city’s clubs cater to every taste imaginable.

Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain Favorites

When wandering around Kreuzberg, I always gravitate towards the famous Watergate Club. 

Its unique location right by the Spree River, with jaw-dropping views of the Oberbaum Bridge, creates an atmosphere like no other. Plus, the music there is always top-notch, ranging from house to techno and everything in between.

In Friedrichshain, you can find Sisyphos, an oasis of electronic music, hedonism, and freedom. The vibe there is incredible, and getting carried away inside is easy.

There are obviously countless other clubs and bars spread across Berlin, each with its unique charm, like Kater Blau, So36, or Ritter Butzke, but these are some of my personal favourites.

One thing I’ve noticed about clubbing in Berlin is the distinctive door policy that many clubs have in place.

It’s essential to know the etiquette while waiting in the queue, such as avoiding loud conversations and dressing appropriately for the club’s vibe.

I’ve had some unforgettable nights in clubs like Berghain and Tresor, where the techno sets by talented performers had everyone captivated. While the door policy might seem intimidating, it’s part of what makes the Berlin club scene so unique.

Berlin clubs also offer a diverse variety of alternative and subcultural spaces. For example, I’ve spent sunsets chilling at Club der Visionaere, a beautiful waterside venue where the vibe is laid-back and perfect for catching up with friends. 

Likewise, the golden gates of Kater Blau and Sisyphos open up to a wonderland where house and techno lovers can dance all weekend.

Additionally, the city is known for its inclusiveness, and several clubs like SchwuZ, Berghain, and Griessmühle cater to the LGBT+ community.

The city’s creative atmosphere has helped cultivate experimental and alternative sounds across various musical styles. For instance, Holzmarkt, a buzzing cultural centre, has allowed me to immerse myself in the innovative music of local and international artists alike.

Grand clubs like Junction Bar (unfortunately now permanently closed) in Kreuzberg provided a platform for budding artists to showcase their talent. Junction Bar was known for its intimate setting, which made it an ideal venue to enjoy live performances.

Friedrichshain, another lively neighbourhood, offers a plethora of venues to showcase the city’s thriving music scene.

Berlin has fostered a unique and exciting atmosphere for music lovers like myself to indulge in. The city’s rich musical landscape continues to be a thriving hub for artists and audiences alike.

The city has something for everyone, from world-renowned clubs like Berghain to lesser-known local gems like Cookies.

Berghain

I can’t discuss Berlin’s nightlife without mentioning the legendary Berghain. This iconic techno mecca is a must-visit for any electronic music fan. 

The club is housed in a massive, repurposed power plant, which only adds to its industrial and mysterious vibe. 

Despite its strict door policy, it’s definitely worth a try, as the experience inside is unmatched. The music is curated by some of the best DJs in the world, and the crowd is always energetic.

The prices at Berghain are reasonable, especially considering the quality of the clubbing experience. Just be prepared for long lines and a potentially challenging entry process. Trust me, though; it’s worth the wait!

I found out that there are an estimated 20,000 artists living and working in Berlin, drawn by the affordable living conditions and available studio spaces. That’s a staggering number!

The city itself is like a blank canvas that allows artists to express their creativity without the constraints they might face in other places.

This environment not only fosters the production of great art but also encourages collaboration among different artists. 

With artist communities scattered all over the city, it’s easy to find people to work on projects together or to simply share ideas and inspirations. In my opinion, the unique atmosphere of Berlin is one of the main reasons that make it a true artist hot spot.

From my experience, both the freedom and creative atmosphere and the rich cultural institutions and buildings make Berlin an ideal music city. It supports artists and musicians, paving the way for new talents to emerge and flourish while keeping the city’s unique character alive.

Berlin is notorious for its underground and illegal party scene, and I could not have had a complete music experience without tipping my hat to some of these events. 

Although I haven’t actually attended one of these parties, the consensus online is joining local Facebook groups and getting friendly with like-minded individuals who’ll provide you with insights into these exclusive events. 

Vinyl

In addition to its vibrant nightlife, Berlin offers music lovers an amazing opportunity to explore the world of vinyl records. While wandering through the city, I stumbled upon numerous record shops, both big and small, catering to various music genres. 

Any vinyl enthusiast can spend hours browsing through the extensive collections, chatting with knowledgeable store owners, and ultimately expanding collections with some rare and unique finds.

Overall, my love for music and my adventurous spirit led me to tailor my own musical journey in Berlin. By harnessing the power of personalization and fully immersing myself in the city’s music culture, I created unforgettable experiences that I will cherish for a lifetime.
